A Mother Brings Her Son to be Shot

A Mother Brings Her Son to be Shot – Main movie still

SYNOPSIS

One night Majella O’Donnell took her teenage son Philly to be shot in both legs. Majella, Philly and his shooters all live within an extraordinary community in Derry, Northern Ireland. The “Troubles” officially ended in 1998 but they are still at war. They do not accept the government or police. They have their ‘own’ ways. All this happens within the United Kingdom. How do you bring your son to be shot? What happens afterwards? How does a war really end?

For five years Sinéad O’Shea has filmed this shocking portrait of a post conflict society.

Production Overview

After reading the headline - mother brings her son to be shot- in the The Derry Journal , director and writer Sinead O’Shea was inspired to explore the community and people in Derry, where the punishment shooting took place. Five years later, O’Shea’s friendship with the family at the centre of the headline and exploration of post war conflict in Northern Ireland culminated into the documentary, A MOTHER BRINGS HER SON TO BE SHOT.
