French Exit

French Exit – Main movie still

SYNOPSIS

“My plan was to die before the money ran out,” says 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite Frances Price, but things didn’t go as planned. Her husband Franklin has been dead for 12 years and with his vast inheritance gone, she cashes in the last of her possessions and resolves to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris, accompanied by her directionless son Malcolm and a cat named Small Frank—who may or may not embody the spirit of Frances’s dead husband.

Dazzling. Pfeiffer, Gloriously back, tops an aces cast that is sublime in every way. An absurdist comedy that is surreal, dark, witty, quirky, humane, and oddly touching.

Production Overview

Adapted by Patrick DeWitt from his 2018 novel FRENCH EXIT, and directed by Azazel Jacobs, the film was shot in October 2019 in Montreal and Paris. Post production took place in Dublin, although due to the pandemic Aza and our DOP Tobias never got to visit and we had to do everything remotely linking up with facilities in LA. Special shout out to our post production co-ordinator Mary Gilroy, and also to Dina and Rory from Planet of Sound who did all our music supervision on the film and found some real gems.

This was our first time teaming up with Noah Segal and Christina Piovesan of Elevation Pictures who were such great partners, and we still pinch ourselves over the amazing cast. Michelle Pfeiffer deservedly was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance and the film premiered as the Closing Night Film of the New York Film Festival. For those who have seen it the cat is actually three cats!
